To
improve the information of historians and their efficiency in
the field of historical research, our aim is to organize several
workshops to present and discuss the new aspects of the use
of computing in history. These workshops will bring together
between fifteen and twenty participants, but could be extended,
if possible, by summer schools. The main purpose is twofold:
information first, to follow as closely as possible the extraordinarily
swift evolution of the technologies available to historical
research, and diffusion, to facilitate the understanding of
these technologies in the historical scientific community.
If the project is deeply immersed in the experience of French
(LAMOP, Ménestrel, Le médiéviste et l'ordinateur)
and Italian (Reti Medievali) medievalists, it will not be limited
to medieval studies, and will open itself to other periods of
history and other disciplines. The meetings will no be restricted
to French and Italian participants but will be opened as soon
as possible to colleagues of other countries (especially Belgians,
Germans, and English). The LAMOP in cooperation with Ménestrel
and its members (CRAHM, CESCM, IRHT, Lyon, École nationale
des chartes), on the French side, the University of Florence
and Reti Medievali, on the Italian one, and the French School
in Roma will be responsible for the running of the program.
Only the French group coordinated by the LAMOP is presented
here.
A tentative survey of the topics it would be ideal to cover
has been established. It goes beyond the traditional limits
of computing and extends to these sciences to which computing
provide an access, such as economy, linguistics, archeology.
It gives a great importance to electronic edition and to documentary
computing: production and structuring of data, specific treatments
of historical data and use and diffusion of tools devised for
and by historians are the main subjects which will be dealt
with, without neglecting the difficulties and problems which
concern the historians.
In agreement with A. Zorzi (Florence) et M. Gras (French School
in Roma), a three years program beginning in 2006 has been prepared.
Its main components are workshops, and it will culminate in
an international conference at the French School in Roma. In
practice, there will be two or three meetings each year, one
organized in France by the LAMOP or by the French participants,
a second one organized by the University of Florence (with the
help of the European Institute) or by the Italian partners of
Reti Medievali, and a third one organized by the French School
in Roma. These meetings will be reported on the internet sites
of the participants, the last conference only being published
as a book. M. Gras will also publish informations on the workshops
in the MEFRMA. The details of the provisional program have been
devised after consultation with M. Gras and A. Zorzi and will
be presented at the "Ménestrel" workshop on
October the 8th, with A. Zorzi.
